English Class

It is our aim to introduce students to relevant and modern English, building up their fluency so that they are able to communicate confidently and effectively. As well as being dedicated to delivering the best possible curriculum to meet your children’s needs, we hope to provide a friendly, relaxed, and fun atmosphere known to be conductive to learning.
We want students to enjoy their language learning experience and to feel comfortable expressing themselves without the fear of making mistakes. Here at Saturday School, we also have the added bonus of having a department consisting of teachers from various countries giving your child a great opportunity to experience an international environment.

Advanced class’

Additional note on Advanced classes

Most of the current English course we offer caters to high level English speaking students who may have lived overseas, have English speaking parents, or have attended international pre-schools in Japan. As they can already speak English very well or fluently, it is important to work on developing their literacy skills. For this reason, we use the highly successful Houghton Mifflin Reading series for all advanced classes in all grades. This course was designed for native speakers in North America and provides a comprehensive curriculum using a reading text as its base with ample opportunity for writing and discussion.

Welcome to the English department!
Our goal is to build up fluency and confidence by introducing students to relevant and modern English in a challenging, friendly and fun environment. We want the language learning experience to be an enjoyable one and encourage students to express themselves without the fear of making mistakes.
We offer two courses; one for advanced students who use the Houghton Mifflin series, and the other for non-advanced students who use the 6 level Let’s Go series. Both courses incorporate the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Phonics is also taught.
We are dedicated to creating a successful programme that will give your child the ability to communicate naturally in English and we have a great team of teachers from around the world giving the experience a truly international one.

I.T.(Computer) Class

IT classes provide an early opportunity to learn a variety of hardware and software, share work, and have fun. The curriculum combines the basics in computer language coding with English language instruction to expand our students' understanding of both. As technology is now everywhere in education and daily life, we use a hybrid approach that maintains the best traditions while providing the most advanced curriculum from around the world.
School is a social environment, and our children are already using social networking tools that demand careful supervision. However, and even more importantly, we teach children to be self aware and ensure responsible use, to teach them to self supervise and become responsible net citizens.
Shawn R. White, M.Ed.

IT Coordinator:Shawn

IT classes include: (1) traditional skills such as word processing, spreadsheets, image and sound editing, and working on networked computers. (2) visual block coding using MIT Scratch, code.org, and "gamification" resources. (3) Online and mobile reading / listening resources to support EFL learning with the library and at home.

Music Class

Children can experience learning English through music in the Saturday School program. Some of the songs taught in the music classes reinforce what they are learning in their English classes. We also teach other songs and incorporate actions with the songs to help the students understand what they are actually singing about and to develop their motor, listening, and speaking skills. The older students will also learn songs as well as learn how to play basic percussion instruments and how to read music a little. All of the instruction is in English.

All our music teachers have a unique style of teaching music that makes English learning fun.

P.E.(Sports) Class

In the P.E. Department, students are encouraged to participate actively in a wide range of sports and physical activities. Students will be introduced to a range of sports from various countries. They will be expected to actively learn about the sport and participate enthusiastically. In the initial stages, students will be instructed in the simple rules, and at a later stage, they will be expected to play each game, demonstrating an understanding of these rules. All instruction is in English. Also, for their development, students are encouraged to communicate in English during P.E. class and to use the vocabulary they have learned.
The priority of the P.E. staff is to provide a healthy and safe environment for the students. Students will be expected to be active participants. They will be encouraged to apply appropriate communicative skills with their peers, learn team values and have the confidence, competence and motivation to pursue physical activity and skills required for effective lifelong learning.

P.E Coordinator:Harsha

In P.E classes we teach students various kinds of sports and games using only English. Our goal is to provide students with a fun English environment where students enjoy learning and using English through playing sports and games.

Library Class

In this class students become familiar with age appropriate fiction and non-fiction books. Lessons involve storytelling, teacher led read-aloud sessions, silent reading, and research projects.
As well as in-class activities, all students are able to borrow books from the Saturday School library to take home. There are a variety of books from Harry Potter and the Narnia series to The Magic Tree House and The Oxford Reading Tree series. Through this program we hope to give students a lifelong love of books.

Library Coordinator:Lizette
